‘Don’t You Dare’ Rally: Wisconsin Rejects This Budget

Wisconsinites have joined together and prevented Scott Walker’s radical plan to take away worker rights for three months, but he is not done. As we learned from their illegal attempt to jam through the budget repair bill in the dark of night, Walker and his allies are so hell-bent on taking away the rights of Wisconsin workers that they are prepared to use any and all means necessary to achieve their goals. Now, with their first cynical attempt at union-busting tied up in the courts, Walker’s allies now say they’re ready to add the rights-stripping measures to the state budget now flying through the legislature. Reintroducing plans to take bargaining rights away from workers into Scott Walker’s fatally-flawed state budget would consolidate Walker’s attacks on Wisconsin’s middle class into a single, horrific piece of legislation. Scott Walker’s budget: * Raises costs in health care and food assistance programs that are relied upon by 1.2 million workers, unemployed, retired and disabled people in Wisconsin * Breaks up and corporatizes the UW System, raising tuition and threatening closure of campuses * Guts the ability of Wisconsin Technical Colleges to prepare and retrain working people * Eliminates advanced placement and science and technology course in schools * Rolls back recycling and conservation programs throughout Wisconsin Despite all of this, Scott Walker’s fatally-flawed budget still has plenty of room for gifts for his dearest friends. Containing $200 million of tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy, as well as hundreds of millions of dollars in giveaways to his largest donors, Walker’s budget is a bonanza for the donors and corporate lobbyists who surely wrote it. The legislature must reject this horrifying budget and start over. The attacks on working families, seniors, students, the poor, and the environment and our rights must end. Join We Are Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Wave at the State Capitol at 2:30pm on Saturday, May 14, because our fight continues and we will not be silenced. Join us.

On September 24, the FBI raided the homes and offices of peace activists in Minneapolis and Chicago. They seized computers, phones, documents and other personal items. The FBI has also been contacting other activists in an ongoing investigation of alleged "material support of foreign terrorist organizations." At this point 23 citizens have been issued subpoenas to testify before a Grand Jury in Chicago. Refusal to testify can result in a grant of immunity followed by jail for contempt if the refusal continues. The federal prosecutor can also issue criminal indictments leading to trial. All welcome to hear the stories of two dynamic and courageous women from neighboring state, Meredith Aby and Sarah Smith, peace and social justice activists who have been involved in this assault on our civil liberties.

MAPC intends to hold a planning meeting on Tuesday, May 10th for a global solidarity demonstration. Most aspects of this event have not been determined, but the action would likely happen soon.

Over the past three months, major demonstrations have occurred in countries around the world including Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Britain, Greece, and The United States. While the rallies in Wisconsin recently have been historic, it is almost certain that events in Egypt and elsewhere helped to embolden demonstrators here. In addition, many solidarity actions occurred nationally and internationally with an emphasis on the situation in Madison. A reciprocal demonstration may help to boost the campaigns both here and abroad. Please join us in our efforts to show the oppressors that people around the globe stand as one in defiance to dictatorship, repression, military responses to peaceful protests, and corporate hegemony.

Directed
by award winning filmmakers Lexy Lovell and Michael Uys, "The
Good Soldier" follows the journeys of five combat veterans from
different generations of US wars as they sign up, go into battle,
and
eventually change their minds about what it means to be a good
soldier.
One of those featured is Madison's irrepressible Veteran for Peace, Will Williams. Williams will introduce
the
film.

"It's hard to imagine watching a more affecting movie than "The Good
Soldier" ... because it may be as affecting a movie as I've ever
seen.
It took one seemingly simple question---What makes a good
soldier?---and
reduced the answer to its essence. That being, the ability to kill
other
human beings. Using the voices of veterans from WWII, Vietnam, the
Gulf
War, and Iraq, each gave this exact same answer, and they all spoke
not
only of their guilt and regret, but also of how at some point during
their time in the military they needed to kill. Their reasons were
different, but the training that gave them the skills and permission
was
not. I found it both hard to watch and hard to turn away from, and I
know I'll never look at the words 'collateral damage' in the same
way
again. Really powerful stuff." - Jason Albert, the Onion

"...a wonderful film...with great emotional power. It was a
brilliant
idea to hear veterans of the various wars -- World War II, Vietnam,
the
first Gulf War, the Iraq War -- because the net effect is to deal,
not
just with one odious war, but with the phenomenon of war as a
universal
evil. It is especially important, if we are to ditch forever the
idea of
'good' wars, to tackle head on the war which is generally considered
morally unassailable -- World War II." - Howard Zinn, author of A
People's History of the United States.

Join us for our first meeting in February! Our central topic will focus on organizing an antiwar action on Saturday, March 20th. Little time remains before the scheduled date for this rally, and we wish to get feedback from our coalition groups, members, and individuals in the greater Madison community at large.

The antiwar movement has been on its heels since the advent of the Obama Administration despite the fact that it is business as usual in D.C. It is high time that the vast majority of Dane County residents begin to remobilize and create the vision of peace and a diminished Pentagon. There is no longer any justification to wait. Obama has clearly stated that he will 'reduce' the deficit by decreasing public funding by $14 Billion and increasing military spending by $44 Billion. If you have been waiting for Obama to begin a progressive movement in the White House, you must now know that he prefers to perpetuate the totalitarian policies of the Bush Administration.

We must stand together for the long haul and force whoever is in power to command real change. Change for demilitarization worldwide; change back to freedom and liberty; change to single payer health care; change for immigrant rights. MAPC hopes this meeting will work as a catalyst to bringing these issues - and other leftist concerns - to light.
