Military Recruiting: Meeting Notes: July 15th, 2004

This is the closest thing we have to meeting notes, as it was strictly a strategizing session to finalize details and volunteer for tasks.

If you’re interested in volunteering for any other events (or ongoing campaigns, research, or other support work), please contact Michelle Nightoak at Nightoak@charter.net or 215-5605.

We had an amazing and productive meeting, with lots of great folks that are working hard to make all of the following events happen:

CALENDAR:

Tuesday, August 17th – 6:30-7:30: Friends Meeting House, 1704 Roberts Court “check-in” meeting to ensure everything is done for upcoming events

Monday, August 23rd – 8a-noon: Madison East, Madison West, and Memorial high schools Leafleting for opt-out information and draft/CO nights

Tuesday, August 24th – 6:30-8:30: Wil-Mar Center, 953 Jenifer Street Draft/Conscientious Objection Information Night

Saturday, September 11th – 5:30-8:30: Wil-Mar Center, 953 Jenifer Street Socialist Potluck with discussion on the draft and conscientious objection with Jerry Chernow and Michelle Nightoak

Wednesday and Thursday, September 15th and 16th or 22nd and 23rd – 3:00-5:00 tabling both days and info night from 6:30-8:30pm Thursday (tentative) UW Library Mall and the Pres House (tentative)

October? Orpheum Theater? Town hall meeting on the draft/conscientious objection/youth and militarism?

October 18th or 22nd and 23rd???: Date/time/place to be announced Draft and Conscientious Objector counselor training (set up by the Friends)

TASKS YOU’VE AGREED TO DO:

Please note that I didn’t list if you agreed to flyer on 8/23 or additional dates, if we decide on them. If you’re interested in that, please contact Ann Casper at amcasper@students.wisc.edu or 260-0965. Also – if you’re interested in distributing flyers anywhere else, or getting the press release somewhere, please let me (Michelle) know and I’ll get you the flyers and/or a copy of the press release as soon as they’re done.

Abby – check with Sociology department for sponsorship of/help with Sept UW event

Ann (did not attend meeting) – coordinate volunteers for 8/23

Carola – check on regulations governing tabling at Library Mall; talk with peace music group about options for 8/24; arrange and coordinate refreshments w/Mennonite church for 8/24; bring video “Blood Makes the Grass Grow” for 8/24

David – write press release for 8/24 and Sept UW events

Dianne – draft opt-out press release; send out all press releases for all events; talk w/ACLU staff to try to get opt-out form on ACLU website

Don – setup on 8/24; investigate and setup sound for 8/24 (with Steve from MAPC’s help); write and read promo for all events for WORT kiosk; be “co-panic” person on 8/24; contact John Peck re: help with Sept UW event (and list events on Activist Calendar?)

Frank – call school district and Attorney Sherrod to ask how they are publicizing opt-out this year, how many years an opt-out form is good for, and whether parents can staff an opt-out table inside the schools on registration days; setup on 8/24

Jackson – left early

Janet – contact Josh Healey of Stop the War at UW for sponsorship and help with Sept UW event; contact Sociology (?) Dept at UW; call Pres House re: Sept UW event

Jerry – stuff mailboxes at WORT with flyers for all events; setup on 8/24; check on an emergency grant for copies/etc. from WI Community Fund; be a general contact person when needed

Kendra - arrange for students at West to help distribute flyers inside school on 8/23 and possibly other dates; try to find student contacts at other Madison high schools

Michelle – send out all emails regarding all events; liaison w/MadTown? Liberty Players for 8/23; get key and additional room at Wil-Mar for 8/24; setup on 8/24; “co-panic” person on 8/24; call Attorney Sherrod to get names of counselors scheduling recruiters this school year; call Will Butcher about setting up Town Hall meeting at the Orpheum sometime in October

Mike – contact Norm Stockwell for use of video projector for 8/24; setup on 8/24

Nathan – create directional and informational posters for 8/24; create and display donation box

Ted (did not attend meeting) – work with MadTown Liberty Players to create street theater piece/other creative activity for 8/23; create ¼ sheet flyer and poster for all events

Tom – setup on 8/24

Tonya – arrange and coordinate refreshments w/Mennonite church; setup on 8/24
