The purpose of these national protests is to call attention to McDonald's (the world's largest reataurant chain's) attempts to evade their responsibility to bring about real solutions to the human rights crisis in America's fields. On Friday, Oct. 20th, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' (CIW) delegation from Florida was joined by 50 local allies in front of McDonals' Headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, and protests continued Saturday across Chicago. CIW's "Campaign for Fair Food" has recently gained prominence through the support of the US Catholic Conference of Bishops, actor Martin Sheen and Nobel Prize laureate Jody Williams.

The Coalition and its allies are calling on McDonald's towork with CIW to establish real human and labor rights for the workers who pick tomatoes for McDonald's suppliers, including: The right of farmworkers to a fair wage; the right to participate in the decisions that affect their lives, and the right to a real code of conduct based on modern labor standards - not the hollow "code of conduct" unilaterally imposed by McDonald's and its suppliers comprised of minimal labor standards and suspect monitoring.
