Summer Study Circle: U.S Involvement in the Middle East – Anti-Imperialist Perspectives on History

Past - Wednesday, June 29 2005 at 8 pm
Rainbow Bookstore Cooperative, 426 W. Gilman Street
Madison Area Socialist Alliance

The U.S. war and occupation of Iraq did not come about simply because of the plots and schemes led by those now in the White House. The history of US involvement, imperialist meddling and interventionism in the Middle East did not begin with the current administration. It certainly did not begin September 11th 2001 .

The purpose of this “study circle” is to provide historical context and analytical perspective for understanding U.S. maneuverings in Iraq and the broader Middle East. Emphasis will be placed on an understanding of the effects of, and responses to US imperialism as a way to decipher the recent past.

The course will meet each Wednesday for eight consecutive weeks. The emphasis will be on discussion, with participants expected to do the readings. Given that its summer and not everyone will finish the readings for a given week, two individuals will take responsibility for each week’s readings, and prepare questions in order to initiate and frame the discussion.

Interested? Check out the complete schedule and reading materials for the study circle at: http://masa.yachana.org
(Those wishing to attend are asked to do one of the readings for the first week prior to the meeting on June 29th.) For more info., call Mike @ 237-1337
