Events for 03/04/2007

This free event is intended for people committed to finding a way to end the illegal Israeli occupation and control of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. the U.S. government funds this occupation with billions a year of our tax dollars, in violation of the Arms Export Control Act and international law. The occupation could not continue without US support. The movement for divestment from South Africa has considerable success in bulding momentum to end the apartheid regime there. Could a similar effort work on the Israel-Palestine issue? Since July 2005 the vast majority of Palestinian civil society has issued a call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the Israeli occupation. A number of solidarity groups, unions, religious groups, businesses and individuals have heeded the call. Locally, Al-Awda had led a campaign for divestment on UW-campus. Is a similar off-campus effort feasible here in Madison? If you support the idea come to learn more about running a divestment campaign and discuss the possibility of initiating a local off-campus campaign.

The first half of the March 4th event will involve a presentation by Al-Awda folks on the basics of running a divestment campaign. This will be followed by a moderated strategy discussion on the issue of initiating a local off-campus campaign. Any decision will be gauged by the level of interest and commitment of those attending this meeting.
